Energy transformation refers to the transfer of energy from one form to other. According to the law of conservation of energy, energy is always conserved in the universe and simply transforms from one form to another, with various energy transformations occurring in daily life.
Energy is defined as a body’s ability to perform work. There are various types of energy, including mechanical, heat, chemical, electrical, light, sound, and nuclear energy. Energy, however, cannot be created or destroyed.
Examples of Energy Transformation in Daily Life
- A hydroelectric dam converts water’s kinetic energy into electrical energy.
- A wind turbine transforms the mechanical energy of wind into electrical energy.
- Solar technologies convert sunlight into electrical energy either through photovoltaic (PV) panels or through mirrors that concentrate solar radiation.
- Humans take in chemical energy in the form of food and convert it to kinetic energy, heat, and other forms of energy.
- Gas stoves transform chemical energy from natural gas into heat energy
- In a generator, mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy. The electricity produced by most generators is in the form of alternating currents.
- A heat engine is a system that converts heat or thermal energy, as well as chemical energy, into mechanical energy that can then be used to perform mechanical work.
- In an electrical motor, the energy transformation is from electrical to mechanical energy through the process of electromagnetic induction.
- Geothermal power plants generate electricity by directing hot steam to a turbine, which generates mechanical work, which is then converted into electrical power by a generator.
- When coal is burned, chemical potential energy is converted into thermal energy, light energy, and sound energy.
