Anti-bonding orbitals are the “inverse” of bonding orbitals. They are created when atomic orbitals interact in ways that result in primarily destructive interference.
We use the * symbol to represent anti-bonding orbitals. Thus, when someone mentions π * orbital, they are referring to an anti-bonding orbital.
